5 Simple Ways To Enhance Website Form UX Design

UX Design

Providing a high-quality User Experience (UX Design) on web forms is a critical part of communication between your company and its customers. A webform must balance simplicity, clarity, ease of use, and best practice guidelines because form fields are a vital part of the user experience as they provide a way for users to give companies their information and make communication easier.

Even though there is no “one size fits all” solution for web form design, if you follow the web form UX guidelines outlined here, you will be able to design web forms that are easy to use, error-free, and ensure users complete them!

1. Shorten the form

It will be easier for users to fill out a shorter web form. The most effective way to achieve this is to cut out unnecessary questions that aren’t directly related to the job or can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.”

For long forms, another good approach is to split fields over multiple pages, so users can complete the form in chunks. Visitors will find this more convenient than filling out a web form that requests all required information on one page.

2. Request only the necessary data

Forms should be as detailed as possible, but you shouldn’t try to collect every nuance of your web visitors’ lives – this can be off-putting and time-consuming – after all, why would anyone want to tell a company about their entire background?

Instead of requesting information that isn’t helpful or necessary, try using alternative methods, such as Google Maps, to suggest your web visitors’ locations based on their IP addresses. This can help you avoid asking for information that your visitors may consider private.

3. Give simple instructions for completing each field of the web form.

A webform should be as simple as possible, so visitors can easily understand what each field means and how to complete it.

When you create a web form asking visitors to specify their state or province of residence, don’t assume they’ll know that the “Postal Code” field requires both upper and lower case letters (i.e., for specifying the postal code, no capital letters are necessary). It is important that your web forms are made in a format that can be read by international audiences; this includes country-specific forms.

You can minimize web form abandonment by asking web visitors what format they prefer (e.g., “Would you prefer to receive emails or text messages?”), especially with international webforms where some visitors may only use one method of communication.

4. Make web form fields as simple as possible.

Make it as easy as possible for your web visitors to fill out every web form field by using simple options (i.e., radio buttons) and avoiding long lists of multiple choice answers. Make sure that all radio button options are applicable as well.

Do not make web visitors choose between options that are not reflective, useful, or relevant.

5. Use web form validation.

Form fields that do not validate web visitor input can make your website lose web visitors and damage relationships with existing and potential customers when web visitors input the incorrect information (or leave web form fields blank).

A well-designed webform should not only make it easier for web visitors to complete tasks but also give them confidence that their responses will be reviewed and acted upon quickly and accurately.

Conversion rates are greatly affected by your website’s form UX. With these five steps, you will be able to design forms that are easy for visitors to complete and reduce the chances that they will abandon their purchase or lead submission before hitting submit or going back to another site.
